Where You’re From: The Story Behind the Local Hoodies

Hometown duck camo hoodies from Southern Maryland to the Eastern Shore and Delaware, each with its town across the chest.

The Southern Maryland duck camo hoodie laid across the bow of a white sailboat.

The Local hoodies started with six designs for Southern Maryland. Now they run up the Western Shore to Annapolis, across the Bay to the Eastern Shore and Smith Island, and into Delaware. Each one puts a town across the chest of a heavyweight duck camo hoodie.

One design, every town

Every hoodie gets the same treatment. The town is set in arched varsity lettering across the chest, and the county sits underneath: ST. MARY’S COUNTY, CALVERT COUNTY, TALBOT COUNTY. In Delaware it says DELAWARE. Each one wears the colors of its hometown high school, with a white keyline around the letters so they stay sharp against busy camo. Towns that share a school share its colors, arranged differently so no two hoodies match. There are no school names or mascots on them, only the name of the place.

Southern Maryland

This is where the line started, and where 7th & Bay is based. St. Mary’s County has the most towns so far: Leonardtown, Great Mills, Chaptico, Lexington Park, California, Hollywood, St. George Island and Pax River. Calvert has Solomons Island, Prince Frederick, Huntingtown, Lusby, Chesapeake Beach and North Beach. Charles has La Plata and Cobb Island.

Southern Maryland towns

Southern Maryland is the one for anybody who would rather not pick. It covers St. Mary’s, Calvert and Charles, and the letters in SOUTHERN are filled with the Maryland flag: the black and gold of the Calverts and the red and white of the Crosslands, with a thin white edge so the pattern still reads from across a parking lot.

Up the Bay and across it

Anne Arundel County has Annapolis and Deale. Across the Bay Bridge, the Eastern Shore has Kent Island, Chestertown, St. Michaels, Easton, Tilghman Island and Cambridge, then Salisbury and Crisfield farther south and Ocean City out on the ocean.

On the Eastern Shore

Smith Island is the farthest out. It sits in the Chesapeake Bay across Tangier Sound from Crisfield, and you get there by boat. Island kids ride the boat to high school in Crisfield, so the two hoodies share purple and gold: purple letters for Crisfield, gold for Smith Island.

Delaware

I grew up in Delaware, a few minutes from the water, so Delaware was always going to be part of this. There’s Dover, Smyrna, Middletown, Newark and Milford, and down at the beaches Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach and Dewey Beach.

Why duck camo

Duck camo is already the cold-weather uniform for a lot of people here. You see it in the blind, on the dock before sunrise and in the stands at a home game. It hides a little mud, and solid lettering stands right out against it.

The IND4000 is a heavyweight 10 oz fleece with a brushed inside and enough room for a layer underneath. Each hoodie is printed when you order it, so nothing sits in a warehouse waiting for you.
